Last night we went to see Swell Season live at Toad’s Place in Richmond, Virginia. Â We discovered Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova quite on accident. Â We look for indy films to add to our Netflix que… and Once made it’s way there. Â Netflix describes it like this:
Â
In this charming contemporary musical helmed by John Carney, a street musician (Glen Hansard) in Dublin, Ireland, strikes up a friendship with a migrant street hawker (Markéta Irglová). Over the course of a busy week, they compose, rehearse and record a series of songs that mirror the duo’s burgeoning romance — and help the young busker release his musical passions. The actors wrote the tunes they perform, and won an Oscar for their efforts.
Â
Well, honestly, a “contemporary musical” didn’t really sound that exciting, but a friend was in town, the weather was blah so we figured worst case we just put it back in the envelope and mail it back. Â Keep in mind this was before the Oscars, so it really didn’t have that much acclaim in it’s corner yet. Â We loved it, went straight to the computer to google the actors, found and purchased the album on iTunes, saw they were coming in concert and well, there you go. Â It was a great show and I was able to try out the Live View option on my Canon 40d. Â Great feature, but my arms are killing me from holding the big camera and lens over my head all night.

Very cool story of how you found these musicians. I too found them due to the movie. I caught Swell Season at the start of the tour in Portland and they were fantastic. I posted a review on my blog at http://isorski.blogspot.com/2008/04/concert-review-swell-season.html. Check it out!
